HAPPINESS DOESN’T COME FROM CIRCUMSTANCES

She wrote and told me that her husband isn’t “happy” being married with children. He wants to leave his family because he’s attracted to other men. He wants to become a sodomite. He thinks this will make him happy. I wrote about a man many years ago who was attracted to other men but married a woman and had children with her. He wanted a family, so he put away his own sexual desires to have one. I found out recently that he has left his family and gone after his “desires.” Now, he tells us he is “happy”!

Our culture has been taught that if you’re not happy, it’s due to your circumstances. If you’re not happy being a boy, become a girl. If you’re not happy being a girl, become a boy. If you’re not happy being married, leave and go seek your own happiness. All this has done is to make people more unhappy, depressed, and suicidal. We can’t think we will find the elusive “happy” we are seeking by living in direct disobedience to God.

Happiness is a choice. It’s a choice to be joyful and thankful regardless of one’s circumstances. It comes from obeying God and knowing His ways are perfect. It will never come from things on this earth because they are always changing. God’s Word and His promises are unchanging and constant. There is far more joy in loving and serving others rather than expecting others to serve you. There is far more joy in being kind and generous rather than being selfish and obsessed with oneself.

What does God tell us about being happy? “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 144:15) “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding” (Proverbs 3:13) Those who make God their LORD are happy! We know who’s in control. We love His promises. We know how it all ends. We know He will never leave nor forsake us. We love wisdom! We can renew our minds with Truth and not live in fear. We can be thankful for His many blessings and His love for us. Why wouldn’t Christians be the happiest people on earth?

But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.
1 Peter 3:14,15
